Ulrich Baer on Reading Rainer Maria Rilke in Uncertain Times

Portrait of Rainer Maria Rilke

“for here there is no place
that does not see you. You must change your life.”

—from “Archaic Torso of Apollo” by Rainer Maria Rilke, translated from the German by Stephen Mitchell

In this class we examine four of Rilke’s poems in light of themes of love, death, and the resilient self in uncertain times: an early poem from The Book of Hours, a love poem from The Book of Images, the first of the Duino Elegies, and one of the sonnets of Sonnets to Orpheus.

Lecture meets from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 6.

Poems will be provided before the lecture.

This live, virtual lecture is structured to encourage active participation. Registrants will receive a Zoom link a week prior to each session, a day prior to each session, and the morning of the lecture. A recording will be made available within forty-eight hours, which will remain available for thirty days.

Scholarship applications must be submitted by Monday, April 21, at 5 p.m. ET.
