John James

John James earned an MFA in poetry from Columbia University and is completing a PhD in English at the University of California, Berkeley. 

James is the author of Extinction Song (Tupelo Press, 2026); Winter, Glossolalia (Black Spring Press Group, 2022); and The Milk Hours (Milkweed Editions, 2019), selected by Henri Cole for the Max Ritvo Poetry Prize.

James is a winner of the 2023 Treehouse Climate Action Poem Prize. He is also the recipient of fellowships and prizes from the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers’ Conference, Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice, the Academy of American Poets, and the University of California, Berkeley. 

James lives in Berkeley.
