Ellen Hinsey
Ellen Hinsey is the author of numerous books of poetry, essays, dialogue, and translation. Her collections of poetry include The Invisible Fugue (Wildhouse Poetry, 2023); The Illegal Age (Arc Publications, 2018), a National Poetry Series finalist and the Poetry Book Society’s 2018 Autumn Choice; Update on the Descent (Notre Dame University Press, 2009); The White Fire of Time (Wesleyan University Press, 2002); and Cities of Memory (Yale University Press, 1996), which received the Yale Younger Poets Award. Her essays are collected in Mastering the Past: Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe and the Rise of Illiberalism (Telos Press, 2017).
Hinsey is the recipient of numerous awards including a Lannan Foundation Award and the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award. A former Berlin Prize fellow of the American Academy in Berlin, she taught for many years at Skidmore College in Paris and has been a visiting professor at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany. She lives in Paris.
