Burt Kimmelman

Burt Kimmelman was born and raised in New York City. He received a BA from SUNY Cortland in 1983, an MA from Hunter College, CUNY, in 1987, and a PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center in 1991.

He is the author of several poetry collections, including Gradually the World: New and Selected Poems, 1982–2013 (BlazeVOX Books, 2013), As If Free (Talisman House, 2009), and Musaics (Spuyten Duyvil, 1992).

Susan Howe writes, “The specificity of Kimmelman’s poems has, for more than thirty years, been a singularly locating force. It situates us in space, in relation to the luminosity of objects, art, and one another.”

Kimmelman is also the editor of The Facts on File Companion to 20th-Century American Poetry (Facts on File, 2005). He currently serves as a professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 1988.
