Joshua Bennett

Joshua Brandon Bennett earned an MA in theatre and performance studies from the University of Warwick, where he was a Marshall Scholar, and his PhD from Princeton University.

Bennett is the author of four books of poetry and criticism: The Study of Human Life (Penguin, 2022); The Sobbing School (Penguin, 2016), winner of the National Poetry Series and a finalist for an NAACP Image Award; Being Property Once Myself: Blackness and the End of Man (Harvard University Press, 2020); and Owed (Penguin, 2020). His first work of narrative nonfiction, Spoken Word: A Cultural History, was published by Knopf in 2021.

Bennett has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Society of Fellows at Harvard University. The winner of Whiting Awards for Poetry and Nonfiction, he is a professor of English and creative writing at Dartmouth College.
