Who. Told. Us. Demons. Are. Real.
And. Now. I. Know. We. All.
Are. Falling. Every. Day. Falling
Into. A. Crack. In. The. Earth.
The. Ground. Of. Being. Split. Open.
Stunning. It. Is. This. Darkness.

Let It Be So

May the desert lavender, poppy, marigold buds,
studded along the trails of Windgate pass,
open their mouths to a gentle rain
then burst into blossom
just for you.
Let it be a merciful Spring.
When the McDowell mountains sing
ancient songs of promise,

I Came Here for Some Answers

At the top of the Grand Staircase
in Bryce Canyon
the hoodoos call to one another—these rock waves,
crests of limestone, siltstone, dolomite, mudstone
paralyzed by time, patiently resist the dark night sky.
I came here for some answers.
But if these stone towers and red spires

Wild Horses Drink from the River of History

Hours before dark, I follow the stony path
from the parking lot to the river bank.
Along the shore I look for crushed branches and trampled grass,
the clearing where wild horses are said to appear.
Then, I hide behind a mesquite tree, hold my breath.
I want to know their secrets.
