Snorkel

translated from the Italian by Will Schutt

To stare into the deep, with a mask and snorkel.
If you learn how to breathe you can keep
your head just below the water for hours
and swim among schools of bream
and watch from above as the seabed recedes
so much it seems to double the distance
between you and the sky, and the world
becomes an egg—half earth, half air—
and you the border that divides them.
Facedown, your body holds the line:
here creatures that swim, there those that fly.
Provided you can breathe, provided you
don’t squirm when water gets into your snorkel
and spit when it slides down your throat.
You continue to float, not thinking.
Now the entire world order depends
on how good you get at spitting and breathing.

 


 

Il tubo

 

Guardare il fondo, ma con la maschera e il tubo.
Se impari a respirare puoi restare
con la testa a pelo d’acqua per ore
e nuotare tra i banchi di saraghi
e vedere dall’alto il fondale allontanarsi
così tanto che sembra raddoppiare
la tua distanza dal cielo e il mondo
diventa un uovo per metà terra e metà aria
e tu sei il confine della loro superficie.
Il corpo riverso protegge la separazione,
le creature che nuotano da quelle che volano.
Finché riesci a respirare, finché riesci
a non agitarti se l’acqua entra nel tubo,
a sputarla via se ti arriva nella gola.
Tu continua a galleggiare senza pensare.
L’intero ordine del mondo adesso dipende
da quanto tu diventi brava a sputare e a respirare.
