A membership-based organization, the PSA supports poets and poetry through twelve annual awards contests, chapbook fellowships, and national events. In addition, the PSA inaugurated POETRY IN MOTION in New York in 1992 and has since expanded the program to numerous cities from coast to coast. The program, which places poems in buses and subways, currently reaches over 10 million Americans on a daily basis. Founded in 1970, the organization’s mission is to foster the professional development of poets and writers, to promote communication throughout the literary community, and to help create an environment in which literature can be appreciated by the widest possible public.
