#PoetsforPuertoRico: A Benefit Reading for Puerto Rico (Newark)

#POETSFORPUERTORICO is coming to Newark! The event will take place on September 29th, 2018, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Centennial Hall in the Newark Public Library, in downtown Newark, New Jersey.

#PoetsForPuertoRico (Newark) is a fundraiser looking to support and aid recovery efforts in Puerto Rico after the passing of hurricanes Irma and Maria, and the humanitarian, economic/fiscal and sociopolitical crises they exacerbated. This initiative fervently believes in the galvanizing force of poetry and community. The event will commemorate the one-year anniversary of hurricane María's passing, and more importantly, will shed light on and visibilize how even after a year, the island continues to struggle with its recovery process and with the crises that were exacerbated by the hurricane (the economic and fiscal crisis, the illegal debt, the austerity campaign, the Fiscal Control Board, the decimation of public education, the mass exodus, foreclosures, crypto-capitalists, etc.)

The first #PoetsForPuertoRico was organized by Willie Perdomo in Manhattan, and since then, under Willie's assistance, this event has taken place in different cities throughout the country, including the Bronx in New York City, Philadelphia, Berkeley, Louisiana, and Chicago.

At #PoetsForPuertoRicoNewark we have a line-up of 30 powerhouse poets, who will be lending their voices from different cities, geographies and backgrounds in New Jersey, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Boston, Washington, D. C., and Puerto Rico. We will also have a drum circle and blessings bestowed upon us by Queen Mother Lloyd. Refreshments will be available as well.

The event is free and open to the public. WE WILL BE ACCEPTING DONATIONS! The suggested donation is $10. Books by the poets performing at the event will also be available for sale.

If you can't make it to the event and/or you're following us from afar, you can donate money online via the following link: https://www.paypal.me/anaportnoybrimmer.

All of the proceeds of this event (on-site donations, online donations, book sales) will be going to two independent presses in Puerto Rico that are socio-culturally (and inevitably, politically) committed to Puerto Rico's literary and arts scene, and that are still struggling through the aftermath of the hurricanes and the crises they exacerbated. The two independent presses are: La Impresora and Ediciones Aguadulce.
