Anthony Geist

Anthony Geist is a translator who has published numerous works over six decades, including Rafael Alberti’s Rome: Pedestrians Beware (Swan Isle Press, 2025); Doce Sones para Doce Poetas [Twelve Songs for Twelve Poets] (Eolas Ediciones, 2025); Ecuatorial [Equatorial] (Nueva York Poetry Press, 2020) by Vicente Huidobro; and Luis Hernández’s The School of Solitude (Swan Isle Press, 2015), which was short-listed for the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation in 2016. 

With fellow poet Peter Carroll, Geist is the cocurator of the book and exhibition They Still Draw Pictures: Children’s Art in Wartime from the Spanish Civil War to Kosovo (University of Illinois Press, 2002). With Reginald Gibbons, he co-translated Guillén on Guillén: The Poetry and the Poet (Princeton University Press, 1979), which was rereleased in 2016. 

Geist is a professor of Spanish and comparative literature at the University of Washington. He lives in Seattle on the land of the Coast Salish peoples, which touches the shared waters of all tribes and bands within the Suquamish, Tulalip, and Muckleshoot nations.
