In 2026, Erin Malone was named an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. Erin Malone will, in partnership with the Bainbridge Island School District, create and lead workshops for fourth grade students. Considering ideas of home and the natural world, they’ll discuss a bilingual illustrated edition of Pablo Neruda’s Book of Questions . Students will use Neruda's work as a springboard for their own and make short poems composed of questions about animals, weather, and seasons. Next, Malone will collaborate with local artists and businesses to create a permanent outdoor installation of the children’s questions, where they will be seen by neighbors as well as visitors to the island. There will be both classroom and public celebrations of the poems and the installation during which questions asked by our newest generation of citizens in the form of poetry will be honored with the community’s attention.
