“I won a $10,000 fellowship from the NEA in 1980 and another, for $20,000, in 1990. These came after my livelihood of writing promotional material and other junk had dried up and I was scrambling to support my family. Earlier, I had reopened the moribund Print Center, which provided services to writers and literary publishers, on the promise and eventual receipt of support from the NEA. Hanging Loose Press, which I've edited since its inception in 1966, received crucial support from the NEA. I also taught for Teachers & Writers Collaborative and NY Poets in the Schools, both heavily dependent on NEA support. I can't imagine how my life would have gone without the NEA.”
