Susan Gubernat

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Susan Gubernat earned a BA from the College of St. Elizabeth, an MA from Rutgers University, and an MFA from the Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa.

She is the author of The Zoo at Night (University of Nebraska Press, 2017), winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize, and Flesh (Helicon Nine Editions, 1999), selected by Robert Phillips for the Marianne Moore Poetry Prize. A finalist for the National Poetry Series, she has received fellowships from the Millay Colony, the McDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

She is professor emerita of English at California State University, East Bay, and lives in Oakland, California.
