Michael Gessner received his BA from Wayne State University, where he studied with W. D. Snodgrass, and his MA and PhD, respectively, from the University of Colorado Boulder.

A finalist for the James Hearst Poetry Prize, Gessner has published sixteen books, and among these, his poetry collections include Nightshades (BlazeVOX Books, 2022); Selected Poems (FutureCycle Press, 2016); Transversales (BlazeVOX Books, 2013); Beast Book (BlazeVOX Books, 2010); and Artificial Life (BlazeVOX Books, 2009).
    
Following an appointment to the department of English at the University of Arizona, Gessner directed the creative writing program at Central Arizona College. He served as editor for Zócalo Magazine, a Tucson-based publication dedicated to local arts and entertainment. He lives in Tucson.
