María Auxiliadora Álvarez

María Auxiliadora Álvarez, a Venezuelan poet, translator, and essayist, was born in Caracas on February 3, 1956. She is the author of fourteen collections of poetry and two books of essays, including Un sol caído avanza [A Sun Behind Us] (Akashic Books, 2025). In 2021, La mañana imaginada [The Imagined Tomorrow], an anthology of Álvarez’s collected works was published by Pre-Textos. Her poetry has been translated into many languages. Álvarez’s honors and awards include the National Poetry Series’ 2024 Paz Prize for Poetry. She is a professor emerita of Miami University, Ohio, where she taught Spanish literature. She lives in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
