Francisco Javier Vingut
Francisco Javier Vingut was born in Cuba, possibly in Havana, in 1810, though some sources list his birthdate as 1823. He initiated his education at St. Mary’s College of Maryland in Baltimore and returned to Cuba after completing his studies. He later migrated back to the United States and settled permanently in New York City, where he taught modern languages at the City University of New York from 1848 until his death in 1857. Vingut edited and published the anthology Gems of Spanish Poetry (F. J. Vingut & Co., 1855) and edited the volume Poesías de Don José María Heredia [The Poetry of José María Heredia] (Roe Lockwood & Son, 1853). Vingut was also the author of numerous books on the studies of English, French, and Spanish grammar. He died in the United States, presumably in New York.
