Emmanuel Hocquard

1940 –
2019

A French poet, essayist, novelist, and translator, Emmanuel Hocquard was born on April 11, 1940. He grew up in Tangiers. 

Hocquard authored more than twenty books in French, including The Invention of Glass, translated by Cole Swensen and Rod Smith (Canarium Books, 2012), which was short-listed for the 2013 Best Translated Book Award; Conditions of Light, translated by Jean-Jacques Poucel (Fence Books/La Presse, 2010); and A Test of Solitude, translated by Rosmarie Waldrop, (Burning Deck, 2000). 

Hocquard died in Mérilheu, France, on January 27, 2019.
