[You love yourself only when in pain]

translated from the Romanian by Monica Cure

You love yourself only when in pain
you pity yourself
when you have a splitting headache
when even your pillow is an enemy
and you seem to feel better when standing
but at night how long can you stay standing
and you get in the tub for some pleasure
to concentrate on something else
and maybe you’ll feel better
and you do, pleasure, the non-human love
of the hot water, its caress on your neck
your back, nothing of a real, human caress
but close to real, close enough
to dilate the veins in your head
and feel better, even if it took until morning, then
when you see yourself in the mirror, in an ugly cap
and look into your eyes, new like a child’s
how long since you’ve seen yourself like this
and you drop your lower lip, like an upset child
then you love yourself and pity yourself
and forgive yourself for everything.

[Numai cînd suferi te iubeşti]

Numai cînd suferi te iubeşti
ţi-e milă de tine
cînd îţi crapă ţeasta de durere
cînd şi perna-i ostilă
