About this Poem

“As a child, one of my first fascinations was time that doesn’t come back. ‘0’ is part of my poetry collection El tiempo es un texto indescifrable (Time Is an Undecipherable Text), which was published by Editorial Literal in 2012. It is an homage to Mexico City and also to Mexicali, on the United States border. Images following one another without commas or periods try to represent the speed of the city, love, desire, and time that does not stop, that does not end.”

—Lauri García Dueñas, translated by Olivia Lott

From a coffee cup’s sweet bitterness into cold wind swept knowing that the place you search and yearn for is nowhere, no street names, no city gate. No degrees nor longitudinal measures to speak of. A compass can be useless when you are lost. Nowhere multiplies in your chest ravenous, like yeast. It hurts. The exact second, your shadow on the pavement. Sometimes your life is a minute ahead and a few days behind the place you want to be. Sometimes things align and you want to tear a piece of the shadow as you would a piece from a loaf of bread.

I come from the fire city.

i come from the fire city / fire came and licked up our houses, lapped them up like they were nothing / drank them like the last dribbling water from a concrete fountain / the spigot is too hot to touch with your lips be careful / fire kissed us and laughed / and even now the rust climbs the walls, red ivy / iron fire and the brick blossoms florid / red like stolen lipstick ground down to a small flat earth / stand on any corner of the fire city, look west to death / the red sun eats the bungalows / the fire city children watch with their fingers in their mouths / to savor the flaming hots
