This three-part seminar is a deep dive into queer and trans poetry that utilizes the line and line break—not as obligation but as opportunity. In this opportunity we will find syntactical derangement, transgressions of sense and breath, fits of tension, seemingly necessary caesurae, and more. If the line and how it breaks is like a voice in the poem, in what register does it speak? To be queer, to act on queer desire, and “to queer” are often haphazardly conflated. In our discussions, we will make distinctions. Not all queer poetry has queer sentences. Or queer pauses. To study these elements, whether there is queer content or not, brings us into a closer collaboration with the poem. As readers. And writers.
Class meets from 6:00–7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesdays, June 23, June 30, and July 7. Course materials can be found online or purchased at the links below.
