If you can point to it, you don’t need a word for it. This fact is foundational. It informs our conversation and our literature. And if absence is what we build our scaffolding around, in an effort to define and contain it, then what strategies can we deploy in opposition to inevitable lack and loss? In this four-part seminar, students will read three books by Richard Siken—written over the span of thirty years—and examine his changing representations of heartbreak as his concerns move from the losses of love, to those of war, and then to identity itself. This class will also discuss the traditions and techniques of the lyric poem, the history of the elegy, and the impulse to fight grief with human utterance.

Class meets from 5:00–6:00 p.m. ET on Tuesdays, September 8, 15, 22, and 29.

This live, virtual course is structured to encourage active participation. Registrants will receive Zoom upon purchase of the course and a day prior to each session. All recordings will be made available within forty-eight hours of a session. All recordings and class materials will remain available for sixty days after the final session
