Poems about food put us close to the thresholds of our senses, invite us to revisit unforgettable culinary experiences, savor cultural memories, and examine our rituals of gatherings and cooking. They also make us stunningly aware of language that names the realm of our hungers. As a side benefit, we reflect upon the earth’s bounty, and both literally and figuratively, upon what feeds and nourishes us. This four-course seminar is for foodies and poets who wish to grow as writers by returning to deep-rooted traditions and gastronomic pleasures found in a feast of poems from The Hungry Ear: Poems of Food & Drink (Bloomsbury USA, 2012) by Kevin Young and A Bowl of Goodness: Nourishing Poems with a Side of Soup, Celebrating Community, Friendship, and Resilience (Storey Publishing, 2026) by Major Jackson.

Class meets from 5:00–6:00 p.m. ET on Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20, and 27.

October 6: First Course—Appetizer
October 13: Second Course—Soup/Salad
