Join us in-person at Beyond Baroque for a poetry reading with author and scholar Marjorie Becker. A historian of Latin America, professor, and poet, her most recent collection The Macon Sex School: Songs of Tenderness and Resistance (Tebot Bach, 2020) reveals a world in which an array of women attempt to alter centuries of misogyny, through their bodies, music, language, and song. The reading will be introduced by author David St. John.

A Macon Georgia Jewish native, Marjorie Becker learned Spanish as a child, studied in Spain and served in the Peace Corps in a Paraguayan village. She holds a Yale doctorate in Latin American cultural history and is the author of the historical monograph, “Setting the Virgin on Fire” (U Cal, 2006), the forthcoming multi-genre work, Dancing on the Sun Stone: Mexican Women and the Gendered Politics of Octavio Paz (University of New Mexico Press,) and the poetry collections Body Bach (2005), Glass Piano/Piano Glass (2010) and The Macon Sex School: Songs of Tenderness and Resistance (2020), all from Tebot Bach. Her poetry has been published widely; one of her recent poems was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. An Associate Professor of History and English at USC, she lives in Santa Monica.
