Los Angeles Times journalist Gustavo Arellano interviews poet Lorna Dee Cervantes and actor and playwright Herbert Siguenza (Culture Clash) for the opening panel of the third Annual East Los Book Festival.
The panel is set for 10:30 a.m. this Saturday, September 12, at the East L.A. Civic Center.
Herbert Siguenza is one third of Culture Clash, the Chicano theater troupe who hosted the first Chicano/Latino sketch comedy series on American television in the 1990s. Last year, Siguenza released his debut collection of plays, “Anthology of Latino Plays” through El Martillo Press.
A new resident of Los Angeles having just moved from Seattle, Lorna Dee Cervantes is renowned as one of the major voices in Chicana literature. She is the author of seven poetry collections, the most famous of which, being her debut “Emplumada,” which won her the American Book Award.
Both will be interviewed by Los Angeles Times columnist and creator of “Ask a Mexican,” Gustavo Arellano. Siguenza and Cervantes will discuss their decades of writing work and touring it across the country.
The panel is organized by the local independent publishing company, El Martillo Press.
The panel will be preceded by opening ceremonies with Senator Maria Elena Duranzo.
The East Los Book Festival is organized by The Goddess Mercado and Legacy Publications. The festival will feature independent presses and local authors for a day of panels, poetry readings, children’s book readings, and more.
