Peter Bush

Peter Bush was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England on March 18, 1946. He has translated work from Catalan, French, Portuguese, and Spanish into English. 

Bush has translated the work of many Catalan writers, including Najat El Hachmi, Josep Pla, Mercè Rodoreda, Joan Sales, and Teresa Solana. His most recent translations from Catalan are El guant de plástico rosa [The Pink Plastic Glove] (Marisma, 2018) by Dolors Miquel and Ca la Wenling [Wenling’s] (labutxaca, 2022) by Gemma Ruiz Palà, released in English by Heloise Press in 2023. In 2024, the New York Review of Books published The Lily in the Valley, Bush’s translation of Honoré de Balzac’s Le lys dans la vallée.

Bush has translated twelve works by Juan Goytisolo, including the memoir Forbidden Territory and Realms of Strife: The Memoirs of Juan Goytisolo (North Point Press, 1989), which was Bush’s first literary translation.

Bush is a former director of the British Center for Literary Translation.
