Culminating Activity:
In these lessons, students read poetry about the intersections between illness and everyday life. For this culminating activity, we suggest looking back to “Teach This Poem: 'When the Virus Comes' by Angelo Geter,” which explores the question, “How will you remember COVID-19?” We also suggest partnering with your school community, including school counselors, to host an open-mic performance where students could perform original music, read poetry or share artwork related to COVID-19, if they feel comfortable.
Additionally, given that many students and families have experienced immeasurable loss, you might want to make this activity optional and/or give students the opportunity to share artwork anonymously, and provide more opportunities for students to discuss this year.
