Andrew Schelling was born on January 14, 1953, in Washington D.C., and grew up west of Boston in Lexington, Massachusetts. In 1973, he moved west to Northern California where he explored the wilderness regions of the Coast Range and Sierra Nevadas and studied Sanskrit and Asian literature at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
