This seminar will focus on one of Euripides’s most devastating tragedies, The Trojan Women. We will take three sessions to navigate through the play, discussing dramaturgical, civic, religious, and historical contexts as well as exploring how Euripides linked the mythical Trojan War to the ongoing Peloponnesian War. We will address how Euripides draws heavily from, and even transforms, The Iliad for the Athenian stage while looking closely at the tragedy’s main characters—Cassandra, Andromache, Helen, and Hecuba—understanding how each articulates distinct responses to Troy’s destruction. Themes to discuss will include rivalry, grief, enslavement, time, death, and the central questions of how to represent and react to catastrophe, both in life and in literature.

This live, virtual course is structured to encourage active participation. Registrants will receive Zoom links upon purchase of the course and a day prior to each session. All recordings will be made available within forty-eight hours of a session. All recordings and class materials will remain available for sixty days after the final session.

Scholarship applications must be submitted by Monday, December 7, at 5:00 p.m. ET. Scholarship recipients will be selected by lottery.
