Maya Phillips was born and raised in New York. She has an extensive editorial background, having worked for a number of newspapers and magazines based in both New York City and Boston. A recipient of an Academy of American Poets’ College Poetry Prize, Maya received her BFA in Writing, Literature and Publishing with a concentration in poetry from Emerson College in Boston, where she completed a creative thesis in poetry and an academic thesis on gender roles and female autonomy in classical Greek tragedy. A former curator of the Emerson Poetry Project, Maya represented Emerson College at the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational as a member of the college’s 2010 and 2011 slam teams. She also represented the Cantab Lounge at the National Poetry Slam in Cambridge and Boston as a member of the 2011 Cantab slam team. She is currently an MFA poetry candidate at Warren Wilson’s MFA Program for Writers.
