Wild Hair

by Alyssa Therlonge

i’ve always enjoyed hunting the wild,
stalking through nature with an immoral smile
mindful of my surroundings, i reminisce on your exotic spirals
drenched with fear, sweat, and paralyzing denial

your nappy mane could never escape my pursuit,
my red-rimmed eyes hunt you down with every intention to shoot
your scent keeps me focused,
it’s as tart and sweet as strange, bloodied fruit
hanging in the eye of my authority, i imagine how your mouth
will twist in horror as i tear out each root

i watch as every fluffy kink falls at my feet,
smiling at my ability to tame such a horrid beast
with you at my mercy, i could never entertain thoughts of your release,
not when i have your skin, eyes, hair and teeth…
equipped with soothing my white fragility

your energy begins to weaken,
and i praise your exhaustion during this chase
your melanin is my internal beacon,
inspiring me to uncover every secret lying beneath
your scalp and terrified face

hair is as good as it’s kept, and i intend to keep every strand
you beg me for compassion, clawing for freedom with bloodied hands
but don’t you see? the rarity you possess must be banned
your hair coverings and your peculiar naps
simply have no place among normal man

cushioned by your knots, i erase your presence in my space
you’ve served your needs diligently,
despite behavior that lacked in grace

i lust after my weapons, eager to hunt and replace
i’ve learned that wild hair serves many purposes,
if you know how to not leave a trace
