Guilt of an Immigrant's Daughter

by Alexa Manuel

I often ponder on the ambitious dreams my parents abandoned when leaving their country behind
So that I could fulfill mine.

Thank You.

To my mother who arrived in The States with an pregnant belly and a mind of desire
Just to give me what she as a child could not easily acquire.
To my parents who were consistently embarrassed in drive-thru lines
for not being able to pronounce menu items like “french fries”.
To my Father, whom would come home crying due to language barriers at work.

Thank You.

For your humiliation and sacrifices.
Although blessed and grateful
I hope in another universe my parents were allowed to prance with their dreams,
pursue their youth,
and not sacrifice everything for me.

Even if that means I never existed.
