Sonnet for Wasting Time
by Josephine Fitz
“My roommate was the MHC news Ed/Op editor when I had a Tuesday night show– she was down the hall doing layout so I’d put on a long track and run down to chat with her.” -Liza Dollins ’93, WMHC DJ
On nights of radiator-bliss when we
Still loved the sight of softly falling snow,
I’d put on a long track and run to see
Her. Starless night, lit by a ghostly glow,
I’d float into the room, rose-like and rough,
To pull her past the duties of the day–
Distraction is a welcome form of love.
She’d roll her eyes. She’d hope that I would stay.
We’d only have five minutes of a song
Before I’d have to go and change the track–
I’ll see you in the room, she’d say, headstrong.
I’d run back down the hall to dig through stacks
Of tapes until I scored the perfect find–
A long and lilting tune that bought more time.
