After Living out of the Car for Three Days on Vacation

by Cailey Calhoun

walking across the Vegas strip        we were catcalled
I wasn’t even wearing            a crop top

but maybe you were        we weren’t even in sight of him for more
than four seconds        but maybe we were

we didn’t look        we didn’t say anything to each other
but maybe I should’ve        we just kept on north

we just kept searching for the        Bellagio fountains we
kept pretending        we didn’t hear the whistle

the shout
                    damn ladies that’s some ass

we didn’t want to say it was real        we wanted
to roll our eyes at this        silly story after dinner

we even had our hair up        we didn’t have on makeup
all these words bounced between us        leashed to our sides

in the crowd        as the sun went down
if we said our thoughts out loud        everyone else would vanish

and we’d be right back crossing        staring that man down
and he would somehow still        win

so we didn’t        we only pointed out the fake Eiffel tower
and told each other how much our feet                hurt
