Mark Schafer

Mark Schafer is a translator of Jewish ancestry. He has translated Spanish poetry and fiction from around the Spanish-speaking world. He translated Stay This Day and Night with Me (City Lights Books, 2023) by Belén Gopegui, which was a finalist for the Spain-USA Foundation Translation Award. 

In 2021, New York Review Books published his translation Migrations: Poem, 1976–2020 by Gloria Gervitz, which won the 2022 Pen Oakland Josephine Miles Award and was shortlisted for the 2022 Sarah Maguire Prize for Poetry in Translation from the Poetry Translation Centre.

Schafer is a senior lecturer in Latin American and Iberian studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston. A three-time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Translation Project Fellowship, he lives in Roxbury, Massachusetts, on the unceded land of the Massachusett people.
