The New Boyfriend

by Jess Munley

She is kind not only to me, but to others. I believe that is what matters most. She cares about my opinions and supports me in them. Like me, she loves my mother. Like the bright sun on a spring afternoon, she warms my skin. I nap unclothed by the window where her soft rays caress me, heating my body. The necklace she gives me is gold, like my rings and earrings. Its glow rivals that of her smile. I pull my hair up for her to clasp it around my neck. The delicacy with which her fingers brush against me makes me shiver. I sigh. In want of her touch, I catch her hand in mine to press it to my face.
