Nevada Add to Notebook

Las Vegas is a place where people come to be unreal. And it's very interesting to be a person conducting a life where people come to forget their lives. And in a certain sense there's a sorrow in the life of a city that is used in such a way.
– Claudia Keelan

Literary organizations & centers

Nevada Arts Council (NAC)
The NAC supports the arts by awarding grants to nonprofit arts organizations, public institutions, and individuals throughout the state. The NAC's Artist in Residence Program places professional artists in schools, institutions and communities in Nevada for one week to four months at a time. The Artists' Services Program focuses its attention and resources on individual artists' needs and concerns and allows NAC to provide better technical assistance to, and communication with, Nevada's artists. The Community Arts Development Program helps local arts organizations stabilize, grow and develop programming through workshops, consultations, networking, research and referral.

The Northern Nevada Writing Project
The Northern Nevada Writing Project is committed to improving student writing by promoting the teaching of writing, recognizing teacher expertise and leadership, building a foundation of research, and encouraging teachers as writers.

The Southern Nevada Writing Project
The Southern Nevada Writing Project's Invitational Institute provides the opportunity for excellent teachers from all levels and areas of the curriculum to come together as a writing community (for five weeks in the summer or over eight weekends in the fall). Within this community teachers share and extend their best classroom practices and talk about aspects of teaching that they find challenging; write and respond to each other's writing; and have opportunities to read, discuss, and inquire into the latest classroom-based professional books and research on writing. The SNWP is an affiliate of the National Writing Project which sponsors over 100 sites across the U.S.

Nevada Humanities
Nevada Humanities is one of 56 state and territorial humanities councils affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition to the several hundred separate activities supported each year through grants, Nevada Humanities coordinates several programs directly or in cooperation with other organizations, including the Vegas Valley Book Festival.

Readings series, conferences, & literary festivals

Vegas Valley Book Festival
An annual festival that features poets, children's/young adult authors, fiction and TV/screenwriters during three days of readings, lectures, panel discussions, workshops for aspiring writers of all ages, and an outdoor book fair with family-oriented activities.

Wilder Wild West Summer Institute
A summer institute for readers, writers, and teachers. During the Institute, participants explore historical figures and contemporary writers, while regional writers conduct readings and workshops. The final days of the Institute center on developing, revising, and publishing the participants' own writing in a volume tentatively titled, The Wilder West Handbook. The Institute is sponsored by the University of Nevada, Reno, the Nevada Humanities Committee, and the Northern Nevada Writing Project.
