translated from the Romanian by Monica Cure
The dream seems universal, I’ve heard it
told by others too, at least
the first part is the same, the rest depends
on the person: at school, we’re given
a test and of course I haven’t studied
at all. I’m afraid and ashamed and then
suddenly I know I’ve graduated
long ago, I’m grown and what can they
do to me. Then I lean back and stretch out
my legs on the bench, I look with pity
at my classmates, so tiny and weak, caught
in their worries like flies in a curtain
you still don’t know we were born into death
and our troubles are already over?
