West of the Ten-thousand Mile Bridge
                                                      my solitary thatched house stands     
Near the Hundred Flower Stream    
                                                      is a poet’s sacred hideaway

Bright green bamboo sway        
                                         as graceful as feminine spirits      
Rain-soaked lotus blossoms drift      
                                         turning redder and more fragrant

Old friends with fat pensions      
                                         stopped answering my letters
My children are always hungry
                                         their faces are cold and wretched

The madman is laughing      
                                          I am digging my own grave
Carefree and giddy    
                             growing older     growing madder

百花潭水即滄浪
風含翠篠娟娟淨 
雨裛紅蕖冉冉香
厚祿故人書斷絕 
恆飢稚子色淒涼
