June Gervais, Jobs for Girls with Artistic Flair (virtual/hybrid)

June Gervais will be in conversation with Alicia Hoffman.

Misfit and dreamer Gina Mulley has grown up in her older brother Dominic’s tattoo shop. Her fiercest ambition is to become a tattoo artist in her own right, but this is 1985; tattooing is almost entirely male, on the gritty fringes of society, and hostile to newcomers. Dominic reluctantly grants Gina one year—and one year only—to prove herself. Called “fascinating, funny, touching, and hugely compelling” by Rosie Walsh,  Jobs for Girls with Artistic Flair is an uplifting, feminist coming-of-age love story about a young woman who dreams of becoming a tattoo artist and living life on her own terms.

June Gervais grew up on the south shore of Long Island and earned her MFA in writing and literature at Bennington College. Her essays and stories have been published widely. Her many jobs have included shelving library books, taking classified ads, grassroots activism, graphic design, art direction, and teaching. Jobs for Girls with Artistic Flair is her debut novel.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Alicia Hoffman lives, writes, and teaches in Rochester, NY. She is the author of three collections of poems, most recently ANIMAL (Futurecycle Press, 2021). Her poems have been published in a variety of journals, including Thrush, Radar Poetry, Trampset, The Night Heron Barks, Tar River Poetry, The Penn Review, Glass: A Poetry Journal, Typishly, One Art, and elsewhere.
